Are electric scooters waterproof?

Short answer: no electric scooter is truly waterproof. The realistic goal is water resistance — enough sealing to survive a wet street, not a flooded one. Knowing where that line sits keeps you safe and keeps your warranty intact.

IP ratings, in plain language

• IPX4 — protected against splashes from any direction. Fine for light rain and wet pavement.
• IP55 — dust protected and resistant to low-pressure water jets. Comfortable in steady rain, still not for puddles.
• IPX7 and above — rare on consumer scooters and usually applies to a single component, not the whole vehicle.

The first digit covers dust, the second covers water. An “X” simply means that part was never tested — not that it is unprotected.

Riding in the rain, safely

• Cut your usual speed by roughly a third; wet ground doubles braking distance.
• Brake earlier and more gently, and never brake mid-turn.
• Avoid puddles — they hide potholes and can push water into the deck.
• Stay off painted lines, metal covers and tram rails; they turn slick instantly.
• Never ride through standing water deeper than the wheel hub.
• Wear reflective gear — visibility drops sharply in rain.

After a wet ride: the 5-minute routine

1. Wipe the deck, stem, display and charging port dry with a cloth.
2. Wait until the charging port is completely dry before plugging in — charging a wet port is the most common cause of electrical damage.
3. Let the scooter dry indoors at room temperature; never use direct heat.
4. Check the brakes on the next ride; wet pads bite differently.
5. Re-lubricate the folding mechanism and screws periodically to prevent rust.

What never to do

• Never pressure-wash or hose down a scooter.
• Never submerge it, even partially.
• Never store it outdoors uncovered.
• Never charge a damp battery or port.
